Whether you are exploring a reef, spearfishing or enjoying a snorkel, the SOS Freedom8 gives you a personal electronic shark deterrent that travels with you. Developed by Sentinel Ocean Systems, it uses Shark Shield electrical deterrent technology to encourage approaching sharks to turn away at close range.

The electronics module sits in a neoprene pouch worn around your ankle, while a flexible antenna trails through the water. This wearable arrangement lets you take the deterrent with you as you swim, rather than relying on equipment fixed in one location.

How does the Freedom8 work?

Sharks have sensitive electrical receptors called the Ampullae of Lorenzini, which help them detect faint electrical signals in the water. The Freedom8 sends electrical pulses between two electrodes on its antenna. At close range, this field can create an uncomfortable sensation for a shark and encourage it to change direction.

The system is designed to influence shark behaviour without injuring the shark. Its underlying electrical deterrent technology has a history of independent testing and peer-reviewed research. That research concerns the technology and earlier devices; it should not be read as a separate effectiveness trial of the Freedom8 model.
