Semi-Dry Wetsuits

Semi-dry wetsuits use improved seals, particularly at the wrists and ankles, to minimise flushing: the exchange of water inside the suit with colder water outside. With the correct fit, the seals help retain water your body has already warmed, reducing the need to warm incoming cold water. The neoprene provides insulation, while reduced flushing helps limit heat loss. A dry main zip is not a requirement shared by every semi-dry design. Brands use the term differently, so compare the exact model’s seals, seams and zip construction.

Some semi-dry wetsuits use a conventional main zip with sealing panels; others add a waterproof dry main zip. A dry zip is designed to form a watertight closure when correctly closed and maintained, providing an additional barrier to water entry. Neck sealing, wrist and ankle seals, seams and fit all contribute to reducing flushing. Even with a dry zip, water can enter through the seals. A close fit remains essential, and a semi-dry wetsuit is not a drysuit.
